Sauber execute the DHL Fastest Pit Stop in Monaco
All eyes were on Charles Leclerc in the Grand Prix of Monaco: for the first time since Olivier Beretta in 1994, a Monegasque was competing in the highest echelon of the sport in the Principality. Even though the rookie did not ultimately see the checkered flag after a collision with Brendon Hartley, the local hero nevertheless had the satisfaction of being presented with an award.
When Leclerc made his only pit stop of the race on the 14th lap, he was equipped with new tires in just 2.21 seconds. The Sauber crew thus completed the DHL Fastest Pit Stop of the race and once again emphasized their great run of form in the season so far.
Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel required 2.38 seconds each for their single stops. Like most of the other contestants, including race winner Daniel Ricciardo, the duo opted for a one-stop strategy, came into the pits early and changed from Hypersoft to Supersoft.
Towards the end of the race, the performance of the tires fell away dramatically, but they just about managed to avoid having to make a second stop.
The Monaco crowd saw a total of only 26 pit stops, of which 15 took less than three seconds. Making more stops than anyone else were Williams drivers Sergey Sirotkin and Lance Stroll, who called in at the pits three times, either for a tire change or to serve a penalty.
