Mia 5an Mia – FC Bayern wins fifth German league title

It was an emotional final day of the 2016/2017 Bundesliga season: although FC Bayern had secured the German league title ahead of the match against Freiburg, there was still the matter of hoisting the trophy – and saying goodbye to some beloved players.

Title celebrations are always a prestigious affair for FC Bayern (and there have, of course, been plenty) but the atmosphere was particularly jubilant over the weekend following FC Bayern’s 4-1 win over Freiburg at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

The win marked the official end of FC Bayern’s fifth winning season in a row – a Bundesliga record. For Philipp Lahm, it was his eighth and final title with Germany’s most successful club after announcing his retirement earlier in the season.

For Lahm and FC Bayern fans alike, his final day on the pitch was one full of emotions and fond memories.

Lahm played 517 matches with FC Bayern and has captained the squad since 2011. His absence will be keenly felt at the club.

A man who's achieved outstanding things. A superb captain, a superb player. I'll miss Philipp.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, FC Bayern Chairman

In addition to Lahm’s retirement, Xabi Alonso also played his final match after announcing his retirement earlier in the season.

Since coming to FC Bayern three years ago, Xabi’s impact on the team has been unmistakable.  Rummenigge called him a “metronome” during the post-match celebrations, referring to Xabi’s ability to orchestrate a match.

FC Bayern also bid farewell to Tom Starke, who proved to be a capable backup goalkeeper to Manuel Neuer over the years.

A family fest

The celebration for Bayern’s fifth-straight league title and the outpouring of support for the players leaving the team were not limited to the thousands of fans at Allianz Arena or the thousands more who took to Munich’s Marienplatz for the official celebration. Members of the FC Bayern Global Family took part from every corner of the globe.

The emotions from this weekend won’t fade from memory any time soon, and DHL is thrilled to offer fans the opportunity to win some great prizes as mementos from an outstanding season.
