Red Bull get better and better: DHL Fastest Pit Stop with not one but two spectacular double stacks
Everyone knows that the Red Bull mechanics reign supreme in the DHL Fastest Pit Stop Award. But the level of perfection that the team has achieved over the last three Formula 1 race weekends must be downright terrifying for the opposition. With a sensational double stack, their achievement went far beyond picking up maximum points towards the DHL Fastest Pit Stop Award last weekend.
Red Bull made four pit stops during the race, two per driver. On both lap 13 and lap 23, Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez were called in to change tires at the same time. A “double stack”, as this maneuver is known, is a tricky affair. The mechanics must beware of mixing up the tires they have ready in the pit lane, and they also come under even greater pressure as soon as the first of the two cars rolls in.
The pit crew have only to make one small error in changing Verstappen’s tires and Perez, who is bearing down on the box, then loses time if he has to wait. But there is no risk of such problems when the Red Bull pit crew get to work. The first double stack, which took 2.18 seconds for Verstappen and 2.00 seconds for Perez, was already pure perfection and would have been enough in itself to register as the DHL Fastest Pit Stop.
But the mechanics weren’t finished yet. When a safety car came out on lap 23, they again brought both cars in one after the other. This time, Verstappen was up on the jacks for just 1.90 seconds – a record for the current season - while Perez was sent on his way in a respectable 2.05 seconds.
The four Red Bull stops were the four fastest of the Chinese Grand Prix. In fact, we have to go back to Sergio Perez’s first tire change in the Australian GP to find a stop where a Red Bull was stationary for longer than 2.18 seconds. The team’s last nine stops are also the nine fastest of the season. Surely a new world record cannot be far away?
